I will retire from the Directorship of MSRI on August 1, 2022, completing 25 years of intense involvement with the Institute, with four terms as Director from 1997-2007 and 2013-2022 and as Board member and sometimes fundraiser in the intervening years. In the fall of 2021, I was asked by the Board for a fnal evaluation of my work at MSRI, and I have attempted to do this in narrative form, recording some of my adventures, successes, and disappointments, in the hope that this will also provide some historical record that might be useful to my successor, Tatiana Toro, and others. It should go without saying that the accomplishments and activities reported here were never solo operations! The various deputy directors with whom I've worked, and especially Helene Barcelo since 2013, have played some role in every project, as have the development officers and other staff. They have made MSRI's progress in these years possible.
